Description

Active play, ancient stories, one captivating classroom rug. The Serpents and Sticks Rug Game is a uniquely Australian take on the classic snakes and ladders, designed by proud Mandandanji and Noonuccal artist Kiz Costelloe. Children roll the included soft dice and travel across a 2m x 2m board of original Aboriginal artwork — moving, counting, predicting, taking turns and yarning together. A play-based provocation that ticks EYLF Outcomes 1, 2 and 4 and embeds Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into your physical environment under NQF Quality Areas 3 and 6.

How to play.

Roll the soft 10cm dice and move around the rug, following the serpents and sticks. Children practise turn-taking, numeracy and social problem-solving — all while sitting on a culturally significant artwork that opens up everyday yarning about Country, the Rainbow Serpent Dreaming and Aboriginal storytelling traditions. Group play, small-group rotations, free choice — it flexes to fit your daily program.
